Gabriele Gravina elected president of Italian soccer federation
ROME — Gabriele Gravina has been elected president of the Italian soccer federation.
The 65-year-old Gravina, a former Serie C president, was the only candidate and received 97.2 per cent of the votes at an election assembly on Monday.
Gravina says "Gabriele is one of you, someone who wants to change and relaunch Italian soccer. We will change orientation and direction."
The FIGC has been without a president since Carlo Tavecchio resigned in November after Italy’s World Cup playoff loss to Sweden.
Roberto Fabbricini was appointed emergency leader at the beginning of the year after a failed election to find a replacement.

Saudi prince Manchester United takeover closer than ever as Premier League POWERLESS to prevent Mohammad Bin Salman buying Red Devils
THE PREMIER LEAGUE would be all but powerless if Saudi Arabia decides to invest in Manchester United.
Critics of the oil-rich nation’s government, which is currently embroiled in the scandal of missing journalist Jamal Khashoggi, are horrified at the idea of the Saudi royals buying into English football.
Crown Prince Mohammad bin Salman is believed to be ready to bid to own Manchester UnitedEPABut the Premier League would ultimately have to follow the lead of the British government.
And despite the present situation, it is very unlikely the authorities would block Saudi investment in football or, indeed, any other business sector.
For all the tough talking by the UK, America and other western nations about Khashoggi, they all need good relations with Saudi Arabia to meet political and economic goals.
English football has an owners and directors test which Premier League and Football League apply to their member clubs in addition to UK company law.
Could Manchester United fans finally get what most of them have wanted, and see the Glazers exit Old Trafford?AFP - GettyBut blocking an individual or entity who would otherwise be permitted to invest in UK-based company would open up the leagues to legal action.
The Khashoggi case means any progress with the Saudi interest in United will have to be kept under wraps for the sake of appearances, but nothing more.
The biggest obstacle is the attitude of the Glazer family to selling all or some of their stake in United.
The club, as usual, denied it was for sale in the wake of SunSport’s story about Saudi interest led by Crown Prince Mohammad bin Salman.
But City sources indicate that, on more than one occasion in the recent past, bankers were made aware that the Glazers were prepared to consider welcoming co-investors.
If the Saudis want to take on Middle East rivals Qatar and the UAE on the football pitch, as sources claim, they will ultimately want control of United.
They might be willing to have a minority stake and commercial tie-ups initially, but not in the long term.
And the Glazers would need a very good reason to give up their cash cow completely.
Although the Premier League’s domestic media rights are no longer rising in value, overseas revenue is still going up and United’s huge commercial operation has room for more growth yet.
On the other hand, the capacity to increase United’s revenues from last season’s record £590m is not limitless and some Glazer family members are more interested in football – as opposed to pure money – than others.
The possibility of a windfall payment, which would clear the debt the Glazers put on the club to buy it in the first place and leave about £500m for each of the six Glazer children, could tempt one or more of them to sell.
The four major institutional investors in Manchester United plc, which is floated on the New York Stock Exchange, could also put pressure on the Glazers if they believed a buyer was ready to pounce.
Baron Capital Group Inc, Lindsell Train Limited, Lansdowne Partners Limited and Jupiter Asset Management Limited own more than 73 per cent of the publicly-available “A”shares between them.
In theory, they could ask the Glazers to listen to an offer from Saudi Arabia or elsewhere.
If the family refused to play ball, their co-investors could threaten to sell large volumes of shares, driving down the price and therefore the overall value of the club.
But the six Glazer children own over 98 per cent of the “B”shares between them.
Each B share has 10 times the voting rights of an “A” share, so the family has a very firm grip on the world’s biggest and richest football club.
If the Glazers gave Saudi investment in United or a takeover the green light, the UK government and English football would probably be unwilling and unable to stop it.

Former FIFA official Prince Ali takes soccer charity global
GENEVA — Former FIFA presidential candidate Prince Ali is taking his charity project worldwide to build on its work of bringing soccer to Syrian refugees in Jordan.
The prince detailed plans Tuesday for the Association Football Development Program Global to fund projects, donate equipment and provide expert management at a launch at Arsenal’s home stadium in London.
The NGO’s partners include War Child UK, which helps former child soldiers in Africa, the UEFA Foundation For Children, streetfootballworld and the Spanish league.
The prince’s original focus was in Asia, with funding from FIFA payments as a member of its executive committee from 2011-15. He decided to go global after meeting soccer officials on his FIFA election campaigns in 2015 and ’16.
"I realized you could really broaden the work to the entire world where there are so many similar challenges," Prince Ali told The Associated Press in a telephone interview ahead of the launch event.
Central Africa is a target with the War Child Football Club project aiming to kick off in seven countries with help from AFDP Global.
Prince Ali said he is open to working with professional clubs who can apply to partner on projects.
"We are not going to limit ourselves to anything," he said. "There is absolutely no politics involved. And it’s not limited to any place — it could be a project with inner-city kids in the U.K."
The Zaatari refugee camp of 80,000 people displaced from Syria has been the program’s core work with 5,000 children now playing soccer, including on a field for girls opened in recent weeks.
"It’s an unfortunate situation but I’m very proud of what it has become," said Prince Ali, who has no immediate plans to work with FIFA.
"We want to work independently but if we are asked to, then sure," he said. "Any work we do has to be really physically tangible on the ground."
UEFA has supported the Zaatari camp, and its president, Aleksander Ceferin, praised AFDP for "giving these children opportunities that they otherwise would not have had."
After losing FIFA elections first against Sepp Blatter and then in a five-candidate contest won by Gianni Infantino, Prince Ali does not expect to try a third time.
"My focus is on this project," said the Jordanian soccer federation president, who also heads the West Asian group of FIFA member federations.

United stutters to scoreless draw vs Valencia after arriving late
MANCHESTER, England— Manchester United’s players got stuck in traffic and never really got going on the field, either, in a 0-0 draw with Valencia in the Champions League on Tuesday. Marotta's next move: Why Man Utd, Barcelona & Spurs celebrating Juventus BOMBSHELL
COMMENT: Blame Ronaldo! Why not? After all, it was just a week ago Beppe Marotta was named football exec of the year. Today? The 61 year-old is cleaning out his desk at Juventus.
Forget Jose and Pogba. Messi and his benching. The news that really rocked those inside football on the weekend was Marotta's bombshell announcement that after eight years he was leaving Juve. It came out of nowhere. On live TV. Nothing was prepared by Juve. Marotta grabbed hold of the narrative and made it his. Seven Scudetti, four Coppa Italia's and three Super Coppa's. Yet, on orders of the club, his 'mandate' was over.
