Sepp Blatter backs Morocco over North America as 2026 World Cup host
Former FIFA President Sepp Blatter has endorsed Morocco’s 2026 World Cup bid while banned from soccer roles for financial misconduct.
Blatter tweeted on Thursday that "Morocco would be the logical host! And it is time for Africa again!"
https://twitter.com/SeppBlatter/status/966615544890904576
The 2010 World Cup was staged in South Africa.
Referencing the rival joint bid from the United States, Canada, and Mexico, Blatter tweeted "co-Hosting rejected by FIFA after 2002." That’s when the World Cup was in South Korea and Japan.
Blatter’s 17-year reign as FIFA president ended in disgrace in 2015 amid the fallout from American prosecutors charging dozens of soccer officials with corruption, including World Cup vote buying.
Blatter is serving a six-year ban from soccer following the discovery of an uncontracted salary of $2 million to one-time adviser Michel Platini.

Tottenham consider activating contract extension option in Erik Lamela’s deal
ERIK LAMELA is reportedly set for a contract extension at Tottenham.
The Argentine’s current deal – which he penned when joining from Roma in August 2013 – expires next year.
Tottenham could be set to hand Erik Lamela a contract extensionGetty Images - GettyBut ESPN claim Spurs are preparing to invoke the 12 month extension option that was part of that agreement to tie down his future.
Lamela, 25, and defender Toby Alderweireld are the only senior members of Mauricio Pochettino‘s squad not to commit their futures to the club.
But if they exercise the one-year option, that would lessen the doubt of losing the South American this summer amid interest from Italy.
Lamela signed a four-year, £65,000-a-week contract at White Hart Lane with an optional two additional years after completing a then club-record £30m move from the Serie A side.

Throughout his time in North London he has been plagued by injuries, totally a year and a half on the sidelines.

And he repaid his manager’s faith in him by producing an impressive display.
Lamela still faces serious competition for his place following the arrival of Lucas Moura from Paris Saint-Germain and from Son Heung-Min.
That could mean that Spurs could be tempted to cash in if any substantial offers are made over the summer window.

“I am not thinking about how long is left on my contract.”

Euro world: Ronaldo comes good ahead of PSG showdown
Every Monday, I’ll wrap up what happened over the weekend in the top leagues across Europe, and I’ll share what I think are some of the most insightful soccer reads on the web from the past week.
RONALDO BAGS A HAT TRICK FOR REALWhile Barcelona dropped points in a 0-0 at home to Getafe, Real Madrid took care of business with a 5-2 win over Real Sociedad, highlighted by Cristiano Ronaldo’s three-goal effort. It was the first hat trick of the season for the Portuguese star, who also had a hand in setting up Real’s opening goal in the first minute of the match. It was a strong performance from Ronaldo, the timing of which could not have been any better with Paris Saint-Germain scheduled to pay a visit to the Santiago Bernabeu this week for the first leg of their Round of 16 series in the UEFA Champions League.

Worth a read: José Luis Hurtado in Spanish sports daily MARCA writes about the culture of insults between players in La liga, and how what happens on the pitch stays on the pitch.
Hurtado quotes former Real Betis player Poli Rincon, who said:
“It’s a code that exists in football; in my era it was like that, you are paid to take insults. I don’t remember players going to the press to complain, we fought to the death but then ‘see you later mate, best wishes’.”
INTER FINALLY WINS A GAMEWhile Napoli and Juventus remained atop the Serie A standings, Inter Milan, a distant third, ended a two-month winless skid with a 2-1 victory over nine-man Bologna on Sunday. Yann Karamoh, still only 19, scored the decisive goal for Inter, whose previous league win came on Dec. 3. “After a period of crisis we had a sort of duty to invert the trend, to continue our path to the Champions League,” Inter coach Luciano Spalletti said

Worth a read: Matthew Santangelo of Football Italia writes about teenager Pietro Pellegri, touted as the next big star in Italian soccer, and argues his decision to choose Monaco over Juventus was the best for short- and long-term future.
“There is no better club in world football for developing youth than Monaco, where the likes of Kylian Mbappé have been allowed to thrive and move on to bigger things. There will be relatively little pressure on Pellegri in the Principality, he’ll have the option of Champions League football and isn’t massively far away from his hometown of Genoa.”
REUS RETURNS, BATSHUAYI SCORES AGAINBorussia Dortmund has no chance of catching league leaders Bayern Munich – they sit third in the table, 19 points adrift of the Bavarians. But Dortmund extended its unbeaten run to seven games with a 2-0 win over Hamburg on Saturday, a game that marked star forward Marco Reus’ first appearance of the season – he’s been out of action since sustaining a cruciate ligament injury in the German Cup final. Also, Belgian forward Michy Batshuayi scored his third in two games for Dortmund since moving on loan from Chelsea.

Lamela’s 1st goal in 17 months helps Tottenham win in FA Cup
LONDON — Erik Lamela scored his first goal in 17 injury-troubled months to help Tottenham reach the fifth round of the FA Cup with a 2-0 victory over fourth-tier side Newport on Wednesday.
The south Wales club held Tottenham to a 1-1 draw at home 10 days ago but it was outclassed in the replay at Wembley Stadium.
Lamela’s close-range finish in the 34th minute came after an own goal from Dan Butler.
Tottenham, which hasn’t won a trophy since the 2008 League Cup, will next face third-tier northern English side Rochdale in the FA Cup.

Inter’s winless streak extended after draw with Crotone
MILAN — Inter’s winless streak in Serie A will stretch beyond two months after drawing with visiting Crotone 1-1 on Saturday.
Following Eder’s early opener for Inter, Andrea Barberis equalized for Crotone on the hour mark.
Inter hasn’t won in the league since Dec. 3, when it moved to the top of the table.
With six draws and two losses since then, Inter has dropped to fourth, one point behind Lazio, which hosts Genoa on Monday.
It was the first time this season Inter played without captain Mauro Icardi, who picked up a slight injury in midweek training, and his absence in attack was noticed.
Fans attempted to stir Inter into form with a big banner that read, "Wake up, let’s get back to winning," and the Nerazzurri did control for long periods.
Eder rose to score from a header that bounced off the head of his marker in the 23rd.
But then Barberis received the ball amid a crowd inside the area after it bounced off the leg of Inter playmaker Borja Valero, and he scored from near the penalty spot.
Crotone, coached by former Inter goalkeeper Walter Zenga, remained one spot above the relegation zone.

EUROPA LEAGUE CONTENDERS
Sixth-placed Sampdoria and ninth-placed Torino traded first-half goals in a 1-1 draw that kept the clubs in the hunt for a Europa League spot.
Lucas Torreira put Sampdoria ahead with a free kick 11 minutes in then Afriyie Acquah equalized with a shot from beyond the area midway through the half that was deflected in by Samp defender Gian Marco Ferrari.
Torino ended with 10 men after Acquah received a second yellow card for a questionable foul, sparking vehement protests from Torino coach Walter Mazzarri, who was then also sent off.
The fifth-, sixth- and seventh-placed squads qualify for the Europa League.
