MLS commissioner Garber finally gets his Soccer Hall of Fame nod

Don Garber is finally a member of the National Soccer Hall of Fame.

Major League Soccer’s commissioner was originally inducted back in 2016 but put it off so he could be enshrined in an MLS Stadium. The ceremony is set for Oct. 20 at the new Hall of Fame at Toyota Stadium in Frisco, Texas.

Garber was the first of five new inductees set to be announced Thursday. In an MLS staff meeting in New York, Hall of Famer and former national team defender Jeff Agoos formally welcomed Garber to the 2018 class.

Garber was named commissioner of the domestic professional league in 1999. Since then, MLS has more than doubled in size. He is also CEO of Soccer United Marketing, the exclusive marketing partner of U.S. Soccer, and a member of the U.S. Soccer Federation board of directors.

Liverpool vs Real Madrid: Reds fans take over Kiev ahead of Champions League final

Supporters are in party mode, ready to cheer on Jurgen Klopp and his men for the showdown at the Olympic Stadium.

Klopp has urged his team to deliver one final push towards Champions League glory.

The Reds will be looking for their sixth title in the competition against Zinedine Zidane’s Real, who are dreaming of winning the trophy for a third successive year.

Liverpool have enjoyed a stunning run after starting out in the play-offs against Hoffenheim in August.

Asked about his team’s biggest strength, Klopp said: “The spirit, 100 per cent, that we created. Nine months ago we were a good football team, but the boys are ready for the big things now. Maybe we dreamed of playing in the final, but it is only because of the performances that we are here.”

Klopp, who lost in the 2013 final against Bayern Munich as Dortmund manager, said: “I have never been to a Champions League final twice in a row. Experience helps.

“In a second before the game I am sure they will be more confident but that is not where the game ends. We have two weeks to prepare, we watched Real Madrid and we know they are strong, but they have never played us.

“We are Liverpool, we can fight, we can go for the big things, nobody expected us to be here but we are here because we are Liverpool.

“It is an exceptional run to the final, we scored the most goals. They can feel more confident but in the game it does not help all the time. We have to make it difficult for them. We cannot fight on their level, but tactics can bring you up a level. It is worth a try.”

Asked about his feelings ahead of the Wembley final five years ago, he added: “I am pretty sure I was much more excited in 2013, I never expected good things will happen to me as a Champions League final manager and it is difficult to do.

“Sometimes it is a once in a lifetime chance and that is who it felt but we played a fantastic game against an unbelievably strong side and after the game I knew I wanted to have the opportunity to do it.

“I am here because my boys gave me that chance. They fought so unbelievable hard for this and they really deserve to be here. It feels good. I am proud of them. Let’s play football.”

Klopp scoffed when asked about the sneering over Real boss Zinedine Zidane, whose team have finished third in La Liga.

He added: “If people think Zidane he does not have much tactical knowledge.

“If two coaches in the final have no clue about tactics and have race the final – what would that say about the game?

“Zinedine is one of the best five players of all time and in two-and-a-half years, I am longer at Liverpool than he is at Real Madrid and he has the chance to win three Champions Leagues. He is brilliant and I think he is brilliant, just as he was as a player. It works like a clock from Switzerland.

“I saw his teams play a lot and it is fantastic football. It is chaos when it needs to be chaos, but he has world class players. It is enough for me that we have a chance.

“Zinedine was a fighter all his life, he grew up in Marseille. He didn’t need to fight as a player, he was so much better than everyone else. People made him angry – they asked about his hunger. I are grew up in a forest. Now let’s do what we are paid for.”

Jordan Henderson reckons the Reds are ready to make history.

Asked about have to fill the shoes of legendary captain Steven Gerrard, Henderson said: “I am feeling good, but it is not about me, or filling anyone shoes. It is about us creating history but we want go one step further and remember it for the right reason and that is winning the Champions League.

“Anything can happen, especially in a Champions League. For us as a team, we know Madrid are fantastic with fantastic players. We need to perform to the level we know we can and if we do we know we can hurt Real Madrid.”

Defender Virgil Van Dijk added: “Everyone is relaxed, we are looking forward to it, not many players in their career can play these kind of games. Hopefully we will get the right result.

“Off the pitch I like to be relaxed, but when the game starts I want to be myself and that is to help the to play well. I need to be vocal and we need to try to demand more and I do what I think is right in my position.

“From day one the lads and the manager and the staff have made me so welcome and that helps. The results help. Liverpool is my team, Anfield is my home, I love playing for this club. Liverpool as a club deserves to be in the CL year in year out. To be in the final I hope we can do it.

“It is very special for everyone in the squad to be in the Champions League final. We have all been looking forward to it. We need to enjoy it and give everything we have.”

Manchester United boss Jose Mourinho planning £100m-plus summer clear-out with host of first-team stars facing axe

Manchester United boss Jose Mourinho planning £100m-plus summer clear-out with host of first-team stars facing axe

MANCHESTER UNITED boss Jose Mourinho is planning a £100m-plus summer clear-out – with a host of first-teams stars facing the axe.

The Red Devils failed to win a single trophy this campaign, after being beaten to the Premier League title by rivals City.

Jose Mourinho is set to wield the axe at Manchester United and offload his flopsReuters

United also lost out on a record FA Cup win yesterday after losing in the final 1-0 to Antonio Conte’s Chelsea.

And Mourinho will ring the changes, after growing tired of his miss-performing squad full of multi-million pound stars.

Anthony Martial is the biggest name set to be sold, with a bid of around £70m understood to be enough to seal a deal.

The French winger’s reps are expected to hold talks with the club before the end of the month over his uncertain future.

FAN’S VIEW: Anthony Martial and Luke Shaw must rebuild their careers away from Manchester United Anthony Martial is in the firing line at United, and wants to leave the club this summerReuters Luke Shaw has had a number of bust-ups with Mourinho over the past seasonGetty Images

United can still extend his contract by a further 12-months, then cash in on the 22-year-old if a suitable offer comes in.

Luke Shaw will also be axed if a £25m bid comes in after a number of high-profile bust-ups with Mourinho.

United want what was paid to Southampton for the 22-year-old England full-back when he arrived in 2011.

Daley Blind had fallen out-of-favour at Old Trafford, and will be sold to earn some extra transfer moneyGetty Images Matteo Darmian is set to return to Serie A, with champions Juventus closing in on a dealRex Features

Matteo Darmian is all-set to return to Italy as well, with a £14m switch to Juventus on the cards.

And the 28-year-old will be joined in an Old Trafford exit by £14m-rated defender Daley Blind, also 28.

It is understood Mourinho will be able to keep all the money he makes from departures this summer.

He is expected to then invest that back into his squad for another charge at the Premier League next season.

Even Paul Pogba has been linked with a move away from the club, but United are unwilling to let him leave.

And the Red Devils chief could have to £200m to spend to help bring in talent to help the French midfielder.

Bayern’s Sandro Wagner quits Germany over World Cup omission

MUNICH — Germany striker Sandro Wagner has announced his international retirement following his failure to be nominated in the preliminary World Cup squad.

Wagner tells Thursday’s edition of the Bild daily, "For me it’s clear that I do not seem to fit in with the coaching team due to my way of always being open, honest and direct."

The 30-year-old Bayern Munich forward was overlooked by Germany coach Joachim Loew in favour of Leipzig’s Timo Werner, Stuttgart’s Mario Gomez and Freiburg’s Nils Petersen, who was a surprise call-up on Tuesday.

"It was a decision for Gomez and Petersen, not against Sandro," Loew had said.

Petersen, with 15 goals, was the Bundesliga’s second-best forward behind Bayern’s Robert Lewandowski this season. Wagner got eight goals in 14 games for Bayern after his winter switch from Hoffenheim.

Wagner has five goals in eight appearances for Germany since making a late debut at 29.

Wagner, who previously said he "assumed" he was going to the World Cup, told Bild, "I’d be lying if I said I wasn’t disappointed. The World Cup would have been brilliant. I can’t take it seriously but as I’ve often said, there are more important things in life than football."

The forward wished his former teammates all the best for the tournament in Russia and said he hoped "that they come back as world champions."

UEFA picks Serbian referee Mazic for Champions League final

NYON, Switzerland — UEFA has picked two World Cup referees for its club competition finals before the tournament in Russia.

UEFA says Milorad Mazic of Serbia will referee the Champions League final between Liverpool and Real Madrid on May 26 in Kyiv, Ukraine.

Bjorn Kuipers of the Netherlands will referee the Atletico Madrid-Marseille Europa League final on May 16 in Lyon, France.

It is a second Europa League final for Kuipers, after Chelsea’s 2013 win over Benfica. The 45-year-old Dutchman also worked Atletico’s 2014 Champions League final loss to Real Madrid.

Mazic and Kuipers are both picked by FIFA for a second straight World Cup, which kicks off next month.

They also refereed the past two Confederations Cup finals: Mazic in Russia last year and Kuipers in Brazil in 2013.

COMMENT: Inside Chelsea, there's never been any doubting the quality of Charly Musonda. If ever an academy talent was going to make it, it was the Belgian...

We emphasise was, because today Musonda finds himself at the crossroads - and not of all his own making. At 21 and with his peers now establishing themselves in first teams across Europe, Musonda is in the middle of his second failed sojourn. After Real Betis, he's now stuck in Glasgow with very little to show from his time with Celtic. That's two opportunities in two different competitions he's failed to grasp. And at his age, you can't really argue that it's too much too soon for the midfielder. The question has to be asked: for all the potential he showed as a teenager, has Musonda already seen his peak?
